Notes from the Silk Road: The Art of Just "Being"

Notes from the Silk Road: The Art of Just "Being"

They say that "Intangible Heritage" isn't just about the objects we make; it’s about the soul of the process. For months, I found myself mesmerized by videos of Chan Hua (silk-wrapped velvet silk art). I watched the rhythmic, precise movements of the silk being bound around wire and paper, feeling both inspired and a little intimidated.

Last week, I decided it was time to stop watching and start doing.

From Dragonfly to Bluebells I am very much a novice—these are only my second and third pieces—but the process of creating the dragonfly and these blue silk flowers has been a revelation. There is something profoundly calming about the way the silk catches the light as you wrap it. It requires focus, yes, but it’s a gentle focus that pushes out the "noise" of a busy week.

The "Expert" Myth One of the biggest hurdles we face in crafting is the belief that we have to be an "expert" before we begin. We wait until we feel "ready" or until we think we’ve studied enough.

But the beauty of a slow craft like Chan Hua is that it doesn’t care about your resume.

  • You don't have to be an artist.

  • You don't have to have a history of needlework.

  • You don't even have to have picked up a pair of tweezers before.

All you need is the desire to create and the willingness to spend an hour or so just "being" with the materials.

Bringing the Silk Road to You I am so pleased with how these turned out that I’ve realized my mission for MillyRose Atelier is to bring this delightful, ancient craft to others. We are curating the materials and instructions to make this accessible for everyone, so you can stop watching the videos and start feeling the silk between your own fingers.

Whether your first petal is perfect or a little "characterful," it doesn't matter. What matters is the hour of peace you found while making it.

Keep an eye on the Atelier as we prepare to launch our first Chan Hua kits soon.
