The Victory of the Single Stitch: Crafting Through the Fog

At the MillyRose Atelier, we talk a lot about "heritage" and "legacy." But today, I want to talk about something much more immediate: the reality of the maker behind the brand.

As many of you know, I live with MS, and brain fog is a constant, exhausting battle to overcome. There are days/weeks—like this week—where the fog is so thick that even the simplest pattern feels like a foreign language.

When the Hook is a Mountain

We often hear that "crafts are therapy," and in many ways, they are. The rhythm of the crocodile stitch on my Dragon Scarf or the sheen of Au Ver à Soie ribbon can be incredibly grounding. But there is a caveat we don’t talk about enough:

Sometimes, the mountain is too high.

There are days when picking up a crochet hook feels like lifting a mountain. There are days when the "Brand Evolution" plan I’m working on daily feels miles out of reach. And I want you to know—if you are in that place today—that is okay.

Redefining Victory

When you are living with a chronic condition or a tired mind, we have to redefine what an "achievement" looks like.

• If you only managed to untangle one knot today, that is a victory.

• If you simply sat with your yarn and felt its texture without making a single stitch, that is a victory.

• And if you couldn't even lift the hook and chose to rest instead? That is the greatest victory of all, because you chose to be kind to yourself.

The "Slow" in Slow-Made

The Atelier was built on the idea of quality over speed. That philosophy applies to us as humans, too. My progress on the dragon scarf might be slow this week, and the "Essential" kits might take a few more days to reach Etsy, but they will get there.

Every step forward, no matter how tiny, is a win. If your only win today was recognizing that you needed to stop, take heart in that. The silk, the wool, and the heritage will all be waiting for us when the fog lifts.
